Well, howdy there, y’all! Let’s talk a bit about this here… what they call “mindless entertainment.” Sounds fancy, but it ain’t nothin’ but stuff to keep your brain from thinkin’ too hard, ya know? Like when you’re tired of plantin’ taters or chasin’ chickens all day.
Now, I ain’t no city slicker, but even I know about them crossword puzzles. They say it’s good for your brain, but sometimes I just fill in the blanks without even readin’ the clues. Just somethin’ to do with my hands while I’m waitin’ for the biscuits to rise. You see, they got these here newspapers, and in ’em, they got these puzzles. Folks call it a “crossword” ’cause the words go across and down, like a criss-cross fence. And some of these clues, they ain’t nothin’ but plain silly, you know? They ask you things like, “What’s a four-letter word for a cat sound?” Well, shoot, any fool knows that’s “meow”! It’s what my old barn cat does when she’s hungry.

But sometimes, these crosswords, they get on my nerves. They use them big words, the ones that sound like you got a mouth full of marbles. And I just sit there, scratchin’ my head, thinkin’, “What in tarnation does this even mean?” That’s when it becomes less “mindless” and more “brain-bustin’,” if you ask me.
- So what is this “mindless entertainment” anyway? Well, it’s like when you’re sittin’ on the porch swing, watchin’ the fireflies. You ain’t thinkin’ about nothin’ much, just enjoyin’ the pretty lights.
- Or maybe it’s listenin’ to the radio. Them songs, some of ’em are catchy, and you just tap your foot along without even realizing it. It’s a good way to pass the time, especially when you’re doin’ chores like shuckin’ corn or foldin’ laundry.
- And then there’s watchin’ them picture shows. They call ‘em “movies” now. Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they make you cry, but mostly they just take your mind off things. You get lost in the story, and for a little while, you forget about your troubles. Though I reckon some of them shows are too loud and flashy for my taste. Give me a good ol’ Western any day.
Now, some folks might say that “mindless entertainment” is a waste of time. They say you should be doin’ somethin’ productive, somethin’ that’ll make you money or improve your life. But I say, sometimes you just need a break. You need somethin’ to take your mind off the worries of the world. You can’t be workin’ and frettin’ all the time, or you’ll wear yourself out.
And that’s where these crossword puzzles and such come in. They ain’t gonna change the world, but they can give you a few minutes of peace and quiet. They can help you relax and recharge. And sometimes, that’s all you need to keep on keepin’ on. Like after a long day of canning peaches, I just want to sit down with a cup of sweet tea and somethin’ easy to do. And those puzzles, well they fill that gap sometimes. They ain’t for thinkin’ too hard on, just for passin’ the time.
So, the next time you’re feelin’ stressed or overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to indulge in a little “mindless entertainment.” Whether it’s a crossword puzzle, a silly movie, or just sittin’ on the porch swing, find somethin’ that helps you relax and unwind. It ain’t lazy, it’s self-care, y’all. And that’s somethin’ we all need a little bit of in our lives. Life’s hard enough without makin’ it harder on yourself. A little mindless somethin’ or another can keep you goin’. It ain’t about bein’ smart or dumb, it’s about just takin’ a breather. And that, my friends, is just plain common sense. Just like plantin’ in the spring and harvestin’ in the fall. You gotta have a time for work and a time for rest. It’s the natural way of things, you know?
So go on, find yourself a crossword puzzle or a good book, or just sit and watch the clouds go by. Give your brain a rest and let your worries drift away. You deserve it, y’all. You really do. And don’t let anyone tell you different. They probably just need a little mindless entertainment themselves!
