Well, let me tell ya, those world war 2 novels, they’re somethin’ else. Lots of ’em, you know? Like, more than you can shake a stick at. I ain’t read ’em all, mind you, but I’ve heard things. People talkin’, you see. And some of them stories, they stick with ya like grits to a pan.

Them books about the war, they’re all different, ya know? Some are about the fightin’, the shootin’ and the bombin’. Heard tell of one called Band of Brothers, by some fella named Ambrose. Sounds like it’s all about the soldiers, what they went through. Tough stuff, I bet. Like that movie, Saving Private Ryan. My grandson showed me that one. Too much blood and guts for my taste, but it shows ya what those boys faced.
Then there’s the ones about the regular folks, the ones just tryin’ to get by. Like that Nightingale book. Heard it’s about two sisters in France. Imagine that! Worryin’ about your family, tryin’ to keep ’em safe, while the world’s fallin’ apart around ya. Must’ve been scary as all get-out.
- There’s this book called All the Light We Cannot See. Don’t rightly know what it’s all about, but people seem to like it. Long name, though. Hard to remember for an old gal like me.
- And then there’s that Book Thief. Sounds kinda strange, don’t it? Stealin’ books in the middle of a war? Guess everyone deals with things in their own way.
They say some of these books tell ya about the bad things that happened, the awful things. Like that…Holocaust, they call it. Hard to even think about, somethin’ like that. But it’s important to remember, they say. So it don’t happen again. There’s this fella Shirer, he wrote a big ol’ book called The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. Sounds important, but probably too much thinkin’ for me. I like things simple, ya know?
And then there’s the books from other places, not just here in America. Heard about a fella from Russia, Grossman, he wrote somethin’ called Life and Fate. Gives ya a different look at things, I guess. Seein’ it from their side. War’s a mess, no matter where you are.
Some of these books, they ain’t easy readin’. They talk about killin’ and loss and all sorts of heartache. But they also talk about courage and hope, about people pullin’ together. Guess that’s what war does to ya. Brings out the worst and the best in people.

There’s even some funny ones, they say. Can ya imagine? Findin’ somethin’ to laugh about in the middle of all that misery? Heard of one called Catch-22. Don’t know what that means, but folks say it’s a hoot. Maybe that’s how some people cope, ya know? Findin’ a little bit of light in the darkness.
Lots of choices, that’s for sure. Whether you want the thick books or the thin ones, the sad ones or the ones with a bit of a laugh, there’s a world war 2 novel out there for ya. Just gotta find the one that speaks to your heart. Me? I reckon I’ll stick to my stories on the TV. Easier on the eyes.
But it’s good to know these books are out there, tellin’ the stories of what happened. So we don’t forget. So we remember what folks went through, and maybe, just maybe, we can learn somethin’ from it all. Even an old lady like me can see the sense in that.
Some people they read these books and talk about the Pacific and all them battles out there. That’s a whole other story, I reckon. Too much for one sittin’. War is war, though, no matter where it is. Just a whole lotta hurt and trouble.
So yeah, those world war 2 novels. They’re important, I guess. Even if I ain’t read ‘em all myself. They remind us that even in the darkest times, there’s still hope, there’s still strength, and there’s still stories worth tellin’.

And I reckon that’s somethin’ worth knowin’.
