Well, let me tell you somethin’ about this decoratin’ business. It ain’t all fancy fabrics and pretty pictures like you see on TV, no sir. It’s hard work, I tell ya, real hard work.
First off, you gotta figure out what the folks want. Sometimes they know, sometimes they don’t. One time, this lady, she wanted her house to look like a dang castle. A castle! Can you believe it? Took me a while, but we got her some fancy lookin’ curtains and a big ol’ chandelier. Made her happy, that’s what matters.

Then there’s the plannin’. You can’t just start throwin’ paint on the walls and call it a day. Nowadays, them young folks got these fancy computer programs that draw up the whole room, even before you buy a single can of paint. They call it somethin’ with a “D”… 3D, that’s it! Makes things faster, I guess, but I still like my pencil and paper. It’s real, you know? Somethin’ you can hold in your hand and show people.
Workflow, that’s another big word they use. Means gettin’ things done, plain and simple. You got to order the stuff, make sure it comes on time, find folks to do the work. If you’re paintin’, you need painters. If you’re puttin’ up curtains, you need someone who knows how to sew. If you’re puttin’ up furniture, you need some strong arms. It’s all about getting organized and not wastin’ time. My way of doin’ it was always to just write everything down in a little notebook. These kids today, they got apps for that. Faster, they say. I don’t know.
- Pickin’ the Right Stuff: Gotta find good paint, nice fabrics, furniture that won’t fall apart. Don’t go buyin’ that cheap junk, it ain’t worth it. You want things that’ll last.
- Money Matters: Keepin’ track of the money is important. How much you spendin’, how much you charget. You don’t wanna end up broke, do ya? Ain’t no shame in makin’ a livin’, but you gotta be smart about it.
- Keepin’ Folks Happy: At the end of the day, it’s all about the people. You gotta listen to what they want, make ’em feel good about their home. A happy customer is a repeat customer, that’s what I always say.
Now, some folks get all stressed out about this business. Too many things to do, they say. I tell ’em, take it one step at a time. Break it down into smaller pieces. Don’t try to do everything at once. And get help if you need it. There are folks who can help you with the paperwork, help you with the designin’, even help you with the money stuff. No shame in askin’ for help.
And talkin’ about help, there are these computer thingamajigs that can do wonders. I hear they got these softwares that can help you with invoices, project management, all that fancy stuff. I never used ’em much, but the young folks swear by them. Makes things faster, they say. Like I said before, I still like my ol’ notebook, but times are changin’, I guess. If you are startin’ a business, you gotta learn these things.
So, if you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ into the decoratin’ business, just remember a few things. Work hard, be honest, and treat people right. And don’t be afraid to try new things, even if they seem a little scary at first. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll make a good livin’ at it, just like I did. It ain’t always easy, but it can be real rewardin’ when you see a happy home that you help create.
And one more thing, don’t ever let anyone tell you you can’t do it. If an old lady like me can make a livin’ decoratin’ houses, then anyone can. You just gotta have a little bit of grit and a whole lotta heart.
There’s so much more to this work. It’s about takin’ care of everythin’ from start to finish, makin’ sure it all looks good, and that the customer is happy. And it ain’t just about paintin’ and puttin’ up curtains. It’s about creatin’ a feelin’, a place where people feel comfortable and happy. And that’s somethin’ special.

So, yeah, decoratin’ business. Hard work, but good work. And at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.
