That book, what’s it called, “The History of the World in 6 Glasses,” it’s a real head-scratcher, you know? Talks about how folks lived way back when, and what they used to drink. Six drinks, they say, changed everything. Imagine that! Just six! Like, can you believe it? This old gal, me, I’ve seen a lot of drinks in my time, but this is something else.
First, they got this beer. Now, beer ain’t nothin’ new, been around since folks started plantin’ seeds and growin’ their own grub. They say it came about when we all started farmin’, back in the Stone Age or somethin’. Made from grains, you know, barley and such. That Agricultural thing, that’s what they call it. Big change, they say. People stopped wanderin’ and settled down. And they brewed beer! It was food and drink all in one, they claim. Kept folks full and happy, I reckon. And that beer, you know, is related to the start of farming. So important this beer!

Then there’s wine. Fancy stuff, wine. Not like the moonshine my cousin Earl used to make. This wine, they made it from grapes, all fancy-like. Kings and queens drank it, I bet. And them religious folks used it in their ceremonies. Wine, beer, it’s all the same, changes things. Changes how people are together. Made people different, I suppose, rich and poor, high and low. That’s what they say in this book. Important stuff, this wine.
Next, they talk about spirits. Strong stuff, this. Like that whiskey that burned my throat when I was a young’un. They used this for medicine, back in the day. And for gettin’ real drunk, too, I imagine. This book says spirits helped folks sail across the ocean, explore new lands, and all that. Probably gave ’em courage, or made ’em forget how scared they were! They made it from all sorts of things, these spirits. Sugar, potatoes, whatever they could find, I guess. Spirits, they say, helped build empires, strong stuff.
And then comes coffee. Now, coffee, that’s a drink I know. Keeps you awake, makes you talk a mile a minute. This book says coffee came from Africa, or maybe that Yemen place. Some goat herder, he saw his goats all jumpy after eatin’ some beans. Took those beans to the holy man, and bam! Coffee! They say it made people think clearer, work harder. All them fancy thinkers and writers, they all drank coffee, I bet. Coffee houses popped up everywhere, places where folks could sit and gab and talk about important things. Big stuff, that coffee.
- Beer: From the Stone Age, made from grain. Food and drink!
- Wine: Grapes! Kings and queens drank it. Religious stuff.
- Spirits: Strong! Medicine, and for gettin’ drunk. Helped with explorin’.
- Coffee: From Africa or Yemen. Made from beans. Keeps you awake!
After that, they got tea. That’s a gentle drink, tea. Not like that harsh coffee. This book says tea came from China. They used it for medicine, too, just like everything else, seems like. Then it got real popular, especially in that England place. They even had wars over tea, can you believe it? Over a little leaf! Tea, they say, helped build that big British Empire. All them fancy ladies sippin’ tea, plannin’ who knows what. Tea is important, too.
And lastly, that fizzy Coca-Cola. Sweet stuff. Came from America, that’s what they say. It’s everywhere now, ain’t it? You can’t go nowhere without seein’ that red and white sign. This book says Coca-Cola, it’s a symbol of America, of the whole world gettin’ smaller, everyone drinkin’ the same stuff. It’s all about business, that Coca-Cola. Makin’ money, sellin’ drinks. But it’s more than that, they say. It is about people all over the world, drinking the same thing. That’s a big deal, I guess.
- Tea: From China. Used for medicine. Big in England.
- Coca-Cola: American. Fizzy and sweet. It’s everywhere now!
So, there you have it. Six drinks that changed the world, they say. Beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola. Seems kinda simple, don’t it? But this book, it makes you think. Makes you think about how little things can have big effects. Like, who would’ve thought that a little drink could change the whole world? It’s a lot to take in, for sure. This book, it’s got a lot of big ideas, for sure. All about how those drinks, they did more than just quench people’s thirst. They say these drinks, they changed people, changed how they lived, how they worked, how they thought. I don’t know, but it is a lot to think about. These 6 glasses, important things, very important.
These drinks, you know, they are a big part of life. Like, people drink beer at parties, wine at fancy dinners. People used to drink spirits when they were sick. Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon. And Coca-Cola, well, that’s for any time, I guess. They all have their place, these drinks. They make people happy, sad, excited, you name it. They are part of our life. They are part of the human history.

I reckon those drinks have been around for a long time, and they are gonna be around for a long time to come. As long as people are thirsty, they are gonna need something to drink. And those six drinks, they are probably gonna be at the top of the list. They are here to stay. That’s just how it is. They have always been here, these drinks. And they will always be here, I think. So, the next time you got a drink in your hand, whatever it is, think about that. You are holding history, they say. That’s a big thought. Big thought.
