Okay, so I decided it was high time I brushed up on my French politeness. You know, the essential phrases you need so you don’t sound like a complete buffoon. My French is rusty, seriously rusty.
Getting Started
First thing I did was just sit down with a pen and paper. Old school, I know. I started writing down the absolute basics. The ones everyone sort of knows, even if they don’t speak French.

- Bonjour / Bonsoir
- Merci / Merci beaucoup
- S’il vous plaît / S’il te plaît
- Excusez-moi / Pardon
Just writing them out helped a bit. Seeing them there on the page. Then I started saying them out loud. Felt a bit weird, talking to the empty room, but hey, you gotta practice, right?
Digging a Little Deeper
Then I thought, okay, need more than just ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’. What about those slightly more complex situations? Like when you need to ask for something, or apologize properly?
I tried to recall phrases for getting attention politely. Like ‘Excusez-moi de vous déranger’ (Sorry to bother you). That one feels important. Don’t want to just barge in.
And asking for help. Not just ‘help!’, but something smoother. Maybe like ‘Pourriez-vous m’aider, s’il vous plaît?’ (Could you help me, please?). Sounds much better.
I spent some time just repeating these, trying to get the rhythm right. My accent is probably terrible, let’s be honest. But effort counts for something, I hope.
Reflections on the Practice
It’s funny how easily you forget this stuff if you don’t use it. The difference between ‘vous’ and ‘tu’ always gets me tangled up. Decided to stick mostly with ‘vous’ for this practice session. Safer that way, usually.
Also realized how important context is. Just knowing the phrase isn’t enough. You need to know when to use it. Like the subtle difference between ‘pardon’ and ‘excusez-moi’. Still figuring that nuance out.

Overall, it was a decent session. Didn’t achieve fluency overnight, obviously. But I went through the motions, wrote things down, said them out loud. Felt like I actually practiced something useful. It’s about building that muscle memory, I guess. Just trying to be a bit more prepared and, well, polite next time I might need it. It’s a small step, but it felt productive.
