Okay, so I got curious about the whole biotech scene up in Seattle. Heard a lot of buzz, you know? So, I figured I’d take a look myself, see what was really going on there.
First thing I did, pretty basic stuff, just started searching online. Typed in things like “biotech companies Seattle”, “Seattle life science jobs”, that kind of thing. Just wanted to get a general feel for the names that kept popping up.

Digging a Bit Deeper
After the first round of searches, I noticed a few areas mentioned a lot, especially South Lake Union. Seemed like a real hub. So, I focused my searches more on that specific area. I wasn’t looking for anything super technical, just trying to get a list of companies physically located there, or nearby.
I started jotting down names. Big ones, small ones, anything that looked like it was in the biotech or pharma space. Didn’t really filter much at this stage, just making a raw list. It was kind of interesting seeing the variety.
- Made a simple list in a notebook.
- Looked at company websites briefly – just the ‘About Us’ or ‘Careers’ page usually.
- Tried to see if they were research-focused, manufacturing, or something else.
Getting a Vibe from Job Postings
Then I thought, a good way to see who’s active is to check out job boards. Not because I was looking for a job, but because postings tell you who’s hiring, what kinds of skills they need. It gives you a sense of growth and the type of work being done. So I spent some time browsing common job sites, filtering for Seattle and biotech roles. It really painted a picture of the activity level.
Saw lots of research positions, scientist roles, lab techs, but also supporting roles in operations, data analysis, things like that. It wasn’t just pure R&D, seemed like a whole ecosystem.
Putting It Together (My Impression)
So, after poking around for a while, what did I find? Well, Seattle definitely has a lot going on in biotech. It’s not just one or two big players; there seemed to be a whole range of companies, from established names to smaller outfits I hadn’t heard of before. South Lake Union really does seem to be a major center, but I got the feeling stuff was happening in other parts of the region too.
It wasn’t some super formal research project, more like me satisfying my own curiosity. Just following the threads online, making notes, looking at who’s hiring. Gave me a decent overview from my desk chair, anyway. It’s quite the cluster of activity up there, that was my main takeaway.
