Okay, so check this out, I was messing around with some knives the other day, right? Not in a weird way, I promise! I was just trying to learn that thing you see in movies, where people entertain by like, flipping knives super fast between their fingers. Thought it looked cool, and figured, hey, why not give it a shot?
First off, I had to find a decent knife. Nothing too sharp, because, you know, safety first and all that. I grabbed an old pocket knife I had lying around. It was kinda dull, perfect for not chopping off a finger right away.

Then, I looked up a bunch of videos online. Seriously, there’s a ton of them. Some dude was calling it “five finger fillet” or something like that. Others were just calling it the “knife game”. I watched a few, tried to copy what they were doing. Looked easy enough in the videos, right? Wrong!
I started slow, real slow. Palm down, fingers spread, knife pointing down. The goal was to tap the knife between each finger, back and forth. Sounds simple, but man, my hand was sweating like crazy. The first few times, I just barely touched the knife to my fingers. Chicken, I know, but I wasn’t trying to visit the ER on my day off.
After a while, I got a little braver. Started flicking the knife a bit more. Definitely nicked myself a couple of times. Nothing serious, just little scratches. But it was enough to make me jump every time. It’s like my brain was screaming “NOPE!” every time the knife got close.
I kept practicing, though. Bit by bit, I got a little faster, a little smoother. I could do a few rounds without messing up too badly. It still looked nothing like the guys in the videos, but hey, progress is progress, right?
The real kicker? My wife walked in while I was doing it. She just stared at me for a good five seconds, then goes “What in the world are you doing?” I tried to explain, show her the videos, but she just shook her head and walked away. Said something about me needing a hobby that didn’t involve sharp objects.
So, I guess the answer to “what’s it called when people entertain with knives” is either “five finger fillet,” the “knife game,” or “a really dumb idea” according to my wife.
Anyways, I’m still practicing. Maybe one day I’ll be able to do it without slicing myself. Until then, bandaids are my best friend. Anyone else ever tried this? Any tips?

- Find a dull knife. Seriously.
- Start slow. Like, super slow.
- Don’t get discouraged when you mess up. You will mess up.
Is it worth it?
Probably not, but it’s kinda fun in a slightly terrifying way. Plus, it’s a good story to tell. Just don’t blame me if you lose a finger!
