Alright, let me tell you what I got up to the other day. I was clearing out some old boxes from the back of the closet, you know, the ones you haven’t touched in years. Found this dusty box labeled ‘Movies’. Curiosity got the better of me, so I opened it up.
Inside, a bunch of old VHS tapes. It was like a time capsule. I pulled one out, and it had that classic clamshell case. Looked at the spine – it was something from Turner Home Entertainment. Can’t remember exactly which movie, maybe one of those old cartoons or a black and white flick they used to show.

Digging Out the Past
Anyway, I actually still have my old VCR player hooked up to a small TV in the spare room. Don’t ask why, I just never got rid of it. So, I thought, what the heck, let’s see if this thing still works. I grabbed the tape and headed over there.
Put the tape in. Heard that familiar clunk and whirring sound. Had to wait for it to start, of course. First thing that popped up? Previews. Loads of ’em. Trailers for other movies on tape.
That “Coming Soon” Bit
Then I got to this specific section. It showed the Turner Home Entertainment logo again, and then flashed the words: Coming Soon. But here’s the kicker – underneath it, it said On DVD.
Man, that hit me with a wave of nostalgia. I remember seeing those announcements back in the day. It felt like such a big deal! DVDs were the new fancy thing. We were all stuck rewinding tapes, dealing with tracking issues, and suddenly they were advertising these shiny discs.
- No more rewinding! That was the huge selling point.
- Better picture! Sharper, cleaner.
- Special features! Something VHS rarely had space for.
Seeing that “Coming Soon on DVD” on an old Turner tape really took me back. It was the sign of change. We were right at that point where VHS was starting its slow fade out, and DVD was stepping up. You’d see those messages and think, “Wow, gotta get a DVD player soon.”
It’s funny thinking about it now. Holding that bulky VHS tape, knowing it was advertising its own replacement. I just sat there for a bit, thinking about how excited we got for DVDs, and now even those are becoming less common with streaming everywhere.
So yeah, that was my little trip down memory lane, sparked by an old Turner VHS preview. Just a reminder of how tech moves on, I guess. Wild.
