Okay, so I got this wild idea the other day. I’ve always been fascinated by abandoned places, especially old hospitals. There’s just something eerie and captivating about them. So, I decided to look into “abandoned mental hospitals in California.” You know, for some…urban exploring, shall we say?
I started with a simple search. I just typed it into the search bar and a whole bunch of stuff popped up. Mostly articles and lists, a few forum posts, and some sketchy-looking websites. Nothing concrete, really. It was all pretty vague, like “rumored locations” and “may or may not exist”.

Digging Deeper
I spent a good few hours sifting through the results. I avoided anything that looked overly commercial or like a tourist trap. I was looking for real, firsthand accounts, not some polished-up story for clicks.
I started making a list of potential places. Some names kept popping up: Agnews, Camarillo, DeWitt… These were the big ones, the state hospitals that were shut down decades ago. But most of the information about them was about their history, not necessarily about their current state of, well, abandonment.
I then turned to some forums. Let me tell you, some of those forums are a rabbit hole. You start reading one thread, and suddenly you’re three hours deep into conspiracy theories and ghost stories. I tried to stay focused, looking for practical information. Things like:
- Is it actually accessible?
- Are there security patrols?
- Has anyone actually been there recently?
- Any tips for getting in (or, you know, not getting caught)?
The forum posts were a mixed bag. Some people were super helpful, sharing photos and detailed directions. Others were deliberately vague, probably to protect the locations from getting overrun or vandalized. Understandable, I guess. Some, I found, are completely gone. For example, Camarillo is now California State University Channel Islands. There’s some abandoned parts, but you can’t just sneak in.
The Reality Check
After all my “research,” I realized a few things. First, a lot of these places are either completely demolished, heavily guarded, or just plain inaccessible. Second, even if you could get in, it’s probably not the smartest idea. There are risks involved – crumbling buildings, hazardous materials, and, of course, the legal aspect of trespassing.
So, while the idea of exploring an abandoned mental hospital in California is still super intriguing to me, I’ve decided to stick to admiring them from afar, at least for now. Maybe I’ll just watch some YouTube videos of other people doing it instead. It’s probably safer that way!
