Okay, so I had this crazy idea the other day, right? “End of the World Coffee.” Sounds wild, I know, but hear me out. I was thinking, what if things really hit the fan? No more fancy coffee shops, no electricity, maybe no clean water. But a guy’s gotta have his coffee, am I right?
So, I started messing around in my kitchen, trying to figure out how to make a decent cup of joe without any of the usual stuff. First, I grabbed my old hot water tank. Figured that could be a good source of heated water in a pinch, even though these days, I always find myself grabbing those 55-gallon drums for emergencies. Better safe than sorry, huh?

Next, I thought about the beans. Now, I love my Bizzy Coffee, especially their ready-to-drink light roast. But in an end-of-the-world scenario, I might not have the luxury of cold brew. So I got some whole beans. They were a blend of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and Bali Blue Moon, supposed to be good for cold brew, but I figured any bean’s better than no bean.
Grinding was the next hurdle. No electric grinder, obviously. I ended up using a mortar and pestle. Yeah, the kind you see in old-timey pharmacies. It was a workout, let me tell you. I aimed for a coarse grind, like they say you should do for cold brew, but it probably ended up all over the place.
- Grabbed the old hot water tank for some hopefully hot water.
- Got some whole coffee beans – Ethiopian and Bali Blue Moon, I think.
- Used a mortar and pestle to grind those suckers up. It was rough.
Then, I needed to “brew” it. I boiled some water in the old hot water tank. I put the ground-up beans in a jar, poured the not-so-boiling water over them, and just let it sit. No fancy filters or anything. Just beans and water, hanging out.
The Result?
Well, it wasn’t exactly Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf quality. Not even close, actually. It was gritty, for sure. And the taste? Let’s just say it was…strong. Like, “end times” strong. I mean, dark fates, man. But you know what? It was coffee. And in a world gone mad, that’s probably all that matters. Plus, I felt like a total survivalist making it.
It was a fun experiment. Maybe I’ll try it again sometime, refine the process. Or maybe I’ll just stick to my Bizzy for now and hope the world doesn’t end anytime soon. But hey, at least I know I can get my caffeine fix, even if everything goes sideways.
