Alright, let me tell you how I went about figuring out this whole “best beach cities” thing. It wasn’t like I just woke up and knew, you know? It started kinda slow, I was just daydreaming a bit, thinking about places I’ve been and places I’d like to go. The idea of sand and sea kept popping up.
So, the first thing I did was just jot down places off the top of my head. Places I remembered fondly, cities known for their beaches. Simple stuff, really. Pulled out a notepad and pen – old school, I know.

Then, I figured my memory isn’t perfect, and maybe my personal favourites aren’t what everyone thinks of. So, I started doing a bit more digging. Fired up the computer, did some searching online. Not looking for fancy travel agent sites, more like reading forums, blogs, seeing what actual people were saying. You get a better feel that way, less polished maybe, but more real.
Digging Deeper
I spent a good few evenings just scrolling, reading stories, looking at pictures people shared. It’s amazing how many places claim to have the best beaches! Some names kept coming up again and again:
- Rio de Janeiro: Yeah, obviously. Copacabana, Ipanema… they’re famous for a reason. The energy seemed intense, maybe a bit much for a quiet getaway, but definitely iconic.
- Sydney: Bondi Beach, Manly Beach. Australia’s got that whole beach culture down. Looked amazing, but also a heck of a long flight from most places.
- Barcelona: This one interested me because it’s a major city right on the Med. Beach plus Gaudi? Seemed like a cool mix.
- Miami: South Beach always gets mentioned. Lots of glitz, looked like a party scene mostly.
- Honolulu: Waikiki, Diamond Head… classic tropical paradise vibe. Hard to argue with Hawaii.
I also started thinking about places maybe less famous but still great. Nice in France popped into my head, that pebbly beach has its own charm. Some spots in Thailand and the Philippines came up too, though maybe more beach towns than big cities.
Sorting Through It All
Okay, so now I had this big list. The next step was trying to make sense of it for me. What does “best” even mean? That’s where it gets personal.
I started thinking about factors:
- The Vibe: Was I looking for party central, a family spot, or something quiet and relaxing? Big difference between Miami and, say, a smaller Greek island town.
- The Beach Itself: Sand quality, water clarity, waves (good for surfing or calm for swimming?).
- The City Part: What else is there to do? Good food? Culture? History? Just sitting on sand all day gets boring for me eventually.
- Accessibility & Cost: Let’s be real, getting halfway across the world isn’t always practical or cheap.
I basically started filtering my list based on these things. I realized pretty quickly there’s no single “best” for everyone. What I might love, someone else might hate.
For instance, while Rio sounds exciting, maybe the crowds aren’t my thing right now. Sydney is appealing but feels like a major commitment trip-wise. Barcelona kept ticking boxes for that mix of city life and beach access. Honolulu is pure beach bliss, but maybe less on the ‘city’ side of things depending on what you’re after.

So, after going through all that, reading a ton, thinking about past trips and future possibilities, I didn’t land on one definitive answer. But I got a much clearer picture of what makes a beach city great for different reasons. It’s more about matching the city to what you’re looking for at that moment. It was a fun process, though, definitely got me thinking about my next potential trip!
