Alright, so listen up, y’all. We’re gonna talk about somethin’ that happened a while back, in them late 2000s. Don’t rightly remember the exact year, my memory ain’t what it used to be, ya know? But it was a big deal back then, this “craze of late 2000s politics,” like the newspaper folks called it.

Well, from what I recall, it was all about that fella, Obama, yeah, that’s right, Barack Obama. Folks were either head over heels for him, or they couldn’t stand the sight of him. No middle ground, no sirree. It was like a barnyard squabble, but with fancy words and suits.

  • Some folks, they were all excited, talkin’ ’bout “hope” and “change.” Said he was gonna fix everything, make things better for everyone. Sounded real nice, I gotta say.
  • But then you had the other side, the ones shakin’ their heads and grumblin’ about socialism and whatnot. Said he was gonna ruin the country, turn it upside down. Scared a lot of folks, that talk did.

And the TV, oh lord, the TV was somethin’ else. Every night, it was Obama this, Obama that. Debates, speeches, rallies… It was like a never-ending circus. And them news folks, they just ate it up, makin’ mountains outta molehills, ya know?

The internet, that newfangled thing…

Now, back then, the internet was just gettin’ goin’ good. And boy, did folks use it to talk about politics. Blogs, forums, whatever they called ’em. Everyone had an opinion, and they weren’t shy about sharin’ it, that’s for sure. Lots of yellin’ and hollerin’, but mostly just folks typin’ angry words at each other from behind their screens. Didn’t make much sense to me, but that’s how they did things.

What about the economy?

Oh, and I almost forgot, the economy was a mess back then too. Houses losin’ their value, folks losin’ their jobs. People were worried, real worried. And of course, they blamed whoever was in charge, that’s just how it goes. Obama, Bush before him, it didn’t matter. Someone had to be the scapegoat, ya know? And that just made the political fuss even louder.

Was it really a craze?

Looking back, I guess you could call it a craze. People were just so caught up in it all. It was like a fever, a political fever. Everythin’ seemed to be about politics, everythin’ was a fight. Friends arguin’ with friends, families splittin’ up. It was a crazy time, that’s for sure. Made me wanna just turn off the TV and go tend to my garden, where things made a little more sense.

Did it change anything?

Well, I reckon it did. Obama got elected, twice even. And things changed, some good, some bad, depends on who you ask. But one thing’s for sure, politics ain’t been the same since. It’s like that craze opened up a can of worms, and now we’re all stuck dealin’ with it. More yellin’, more fightin’, less listenin’. That’s just my take on it, anyway.

So, what’s the deal with the crossword puzzle?

Now, I hear tell that this “craze of late 2000s politics” even showed up in one of them crossword puzzles, the fancy one in the New York Times. Can you believe it? A crossword puzzle! Guess it really was a big deal if even them puzzle folks took notice. Makes me chuckle a little, to think of all that fuss and bother boiled down to a few squares on a page.

It’s all just a memory now…

Anyhow, that’s how I remember it. A whole lotta fuss and bother about politics. Some folks got what they wanted, some didn’t. Life went on. And now, it’s all just a memory, somethin’ to talk about when the grandkids come around and ask about “the olden days.” And I’ll tell them, “Well, honey, back in the late 2000s, politics was a real barn burner!”

But you know what they say, times change and folks get older, and sometimes it feels like the more things change, the more they stay the same. Politics, it’s always been a bit of a mess, and I reckon it always will be. That’s just the way of the world.
