I went to Costco the other day, and man, I gotta tell you, it was a trip. So, I’ve been hearing all this buzz about how big stores are changing up the way we shop, especially when it comes to checking out.
I decided to see what’s up with all those self-checkout machines. I usually just do the usual line-up-at-the-cashier thing, you know, with a real person and all. But this time, I thought, “Why not give these machines a shot?”

First off, I grabbed my membership card, ’cause, you know, Costco’s all about that membership life. Walked in, did my shopping, got my usual giant pack of toilet paper and some of those tasty muffins. Then I headed to the checkout area.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. I noticed there were fewer of those self-checkout machines than last time. I remembered reading something about how some stores are not too happy with them anymore. Heard they can be a bit of a headache with people not scanning stuff right and all that. I used to like them, I can usually get out in five minutes or less.
So, I’m standing there, looking at the lines, and I see they’ve got this new setup. There’s a staff member at the self-checkout area, checking membership cards and IDs. It’s like they’re trying to make sure only members are getting those sweet deals. Makes sense, I guess. They said “We don’t feel it’s right that non-members receive the same benefits and pricing as our members.”
I picked a line and waited my turn. When I got to the machine, I noticed there are cameras everywhere. I mean, I get it, they gotta keep an eye out for shoplifters and stuff. But it felt a bit weird, like Big Brother’s watching me scan my groceries.
Anyway, I scanned my stuff, paid up, and got outta there. On my way out, I overheard some people talking about how Costco might be looking into even fancier tech, like those stores where you just grab stuff and walk out, and it all gets charged to your account automatically. That sounds kinda cool, but also kinda freaky.
All in all, it was an eye-opener. I realized how much things are changing in how we shop. These big stores are really trying to mix things up, trying to find that sweet spot between making things faster and keeping things secure. It’s a whole new world out there in retail land, and it’s gonna be interesting to see where it all goes.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what Costco and other stores come up with next. Maybe those cashierless stores are the future, or maybe they’ll come up with something even wilder. Who knows? But one thing’s for sure, it’s not gonna be boring.
