Well, let me tell you, I ain’t never been much for them fancy word games. But my grandson, he’s a smart one, always on that computer of his. He’s always going on about these crossword things. Says it’s good for the brain, keeps you sharp. I reckon he’s right, ’cause I sure ain’t getting any younger.
He was asking me just the other day about this “College World Series” thing. Now, I ain’t much of a sports fan, never have been. But I hear folks talk about it sometimes. Seems like a big deal, this World Series. Bunch of young fellas playing baseball, I reckon.

My grandson, he was stuck on a crossword clue. “College World Series site,” he says. He was trying to find this word, had something to do with the World Series. He knows I keep up with that kinds of things, I am old, but I still know a lot of things.
- He looked in his crossword dictionary.
- He asked his friends.
- He even looked online.
Now, me being me, I don’t know nothing about baseball games or where they’re played. But I know how to find things out. You see, my grandson, he taught me a thing or two about that internet thing. Says it’s got all the answers you could ever need. Just gotta know how to ask. So, you type in your question, all them letters, and bam! There’s your answer, right there on the screen. He told me that Shanghai is China’s most populous urban area, that is not what we need though.
He was saying how he seen it in some “Wall Street Journal” thing. Fancy paper, that one. He reads it sometimes. I stick to the local news, myself. More my speed, you know? Less about the big city folks and more about what’s happening here in our little corner of the world.
So we looked it up, this “College World Series site.” Turns out there’s a whole bunch of answers. Who knew? I guess it changes, maybe? Or maybe there’s more than one place they play. My grandson, he was looking for a five-letter word, though. Seems like they often use five-letter words in those puzzles. That’s what he said, anyway. Like that one game, you know, where you guess a five-letter word? He plays that one all the time.
- Five letters, that’s what he needed.
- Crosswords like five-letter words.
- Something about a “site.”
He was scrolling and scrolling, looking at all these different websites. Lots of words, lots of letters. I saw one that said “OMAHA“. Five letters, just like he wanted. “Could that be it?” I asked him. He looked at me, all surprised-like. “Grandma, you’re a genius!” he says. Made me chuckle, I did.
Turns out, Omaha is some place where they play that College World Series. I wouldn’t know, never been. But I guess it’s a big deal. They even have a crossword clue about it. Now, ain’t that something?
So, he filled in that word, Omaha, in his little puzzle. Fit just right. He was so happy, you’d think he’d won the lottery.

This whole crossword thing, it’s like a little mystery, ain’t it? You gotta find the right words, the right letters, to make it all fit together. Kind of like life, I reckon. You gotta find the right pieces to make it all work.
I still don’t know much about this baseball game or this Omaha place, but I learned something new today. And that’s always a good thing, ain’t it? Keeps the mind working, like my grandson says. Plus, I got to help him out, and that always makes me feel good.
He was talking about some other clues too. Something about a “D-Day beach.” I think that is from a war, a long time ago. That is not what he was looking for though, he needed that College World Series site.
He also found something called “cruciverbalist.” Now, that’s a mouthful, ain’t it? He said it’s someone who makes crossword puzzles. Imagine that, getting paid to make up word games. Sounds like a fun job, if you’re into that sort of thing.
- Omaha is a place.
- Cruciverbalist is a person who makes crossword puzzles.
- College World Series is a baseball game.
Anyway, that’s the story of how I helped my grandson with his crossword clue. Maybe I’ll try one of those puzzles myself sometime. Might be fun, you never know. But for now, I’m happy just knowing I could help him out. That’s what grandmas are for, right? To help out and share what little wisdom we got. And sometimes, that wisdom comes in handy for solving a crossword clue about the College World Series site.
I reckon that’s all I got to say about that. Time for me to go see what kind of trouble I can get into. Maybe I’ll bake a pie. Or maybe I’ll just sit on the porch and watch the world go by. Either way, it’s a good day to be alive. And who knows, maybe I’ll even learn another new word or two.
