Okay, folks, let’s dive into my recent adventure: trying to find a business for sale in Des Moines.
My Des Moines Business Hunt
So, I’ve been itching to start my own thing, and Des Moines seemed like a good place to do it. I started by, you know, Googling “Des Moines businesses for sale.” Pretty basic, right?

I got a bunch of results, a real mixed bag. I wanted to find something in a nice area, and also I needed to refine my search to be sure I had a good list of results, I started to find some of the platforms is confusing, and hard to find what I really wanted.
Filtering Through the Noise
First, I tried to put some details in the search bar, like a location, or type, the websites immediately gave a ton of options. It was overwhelming, to be honest. I mean, everything from restaurants to auto repair shops popped up.
- Too many choices.
- Where do I even begin?
I spent a good chunk of time just clicking through listings. I quickly learned that “great opportunity!” could mean anything from “turnkey operation” to “needs a complete overhaul.” Gotta read the fine print, people!
I also started noticing that some listings were, shall we say, light on details. Like, no financials, no real description of the customer base, just a vague promise of potential. Those got a quick “next!” from me. I ain’t got time to play detective.
Digging Deeper
After I weeded out the obvious duds, I started making a list of the businesses that seemed promising. Then came the real work: research. I started looking up these businesses online, checking out their websites, social media, online reviews—anything I could find to get a sense of their reputation and how they operate.

I also started driving around Des Moines, checking out the locations of these businesses. Is it a busy street? Is there enough parking? What’s the competition like? All that stuff matters.
Making Contact
Once I narrowed it down even further, I started reaching out to the sellers. Mostly through email, because, let’s face it, I’m more comfortable typing than cold-calling. I asked some basic questions, tried to get a feel for why they were selling, and see if they were willing to share more detailed information.
Some sellers were super responsive and helpful. Others? Not so much. I even had a few who seemed annoyed that I was asking questions. Red flag! If you’re not willing to talk about your business, I’m not interested.
I set the goal and after some more digging, I found some great busineses in a good position, I had to consider my options, to choose what I wanted to do and what I felt most comfortable with.
Still Searching…
So, that’s where I’m at right now. Still looking, still researching, still hoping to find that perfect Des Moines business. It’s definitely a process, and it takes time and effort, but I’m optimistic. I’ll keep you all posted on how it goes!
