Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get into some YA books about sports. I’m not a huge reader, but I figured, hey, sports are cool, maybe this will be a good way to ease myself in. So I started looking around, just browsing, you know?
I first hit up my local bookstore, I thought, maybe they have recommendations. I went to the YA section, started skimming the shelves. Nothing really jumped out at me. I asked one of the bookstore employees, but honestly, they weren’t super helpful. They just pointed me to a general sports section and it was mostly biographies and stuff, not exactly what I was looking for.

So I thought, okay, maybe the internet’s got my back. I started by typing “best YA books about sports” into Google. A bunch of lists popped up, and I just started clicking through them. There were so many choices. I felt pretty overwhelmed, and it was kind of hard to tell which ones were actually good, and which ones were just, you know, whatever.
- Then I looked on Goodreads. I figured, there, you can see what actual people are saying about the books, right? I spent a good hour just scrolling through reviews, trying to get a feel for what people liked and didn’t like. That was somewhat helpful, but also added even more books to my already huge list.
- After that, I went to my library’s website. I thought, might as well see what they have, right? I checked their online catalog, searched for some of the titles I’d seen on Goodreads, and put a few on hold.
- Then I browsed some book blogs. I searched for “book blogs YA sports” and found a few that seemed to know what they were talking about. They had some good recommendations, and it was nice to read some more in-depth reviews.
Finally, I made my choices. I picked up three books from the library that sounded interesting, based on all the stuff I’d read online. One was about basketball, one about soccer, and one about a girl who does track.
Starting to Read
I started with the basketball one. It was okay, I guess. A little cheesy, but the sports parts were pretty exciting. Then I moved on to the soccer one. I liked that one better. It had a bit more drama and a love story, which was cool. The last one, the track one, that was my favorite. It was about this girl overcoming a lot of obstacles, and it was pretty inspiring.
So, yeah, that’s my journey into the world of YA sports books. It took a bit of work, but I think I finally found some stuff I like. It’s definitely opened my eyes to a whole new genre of books, and I might even try some more in the future. Who knew, maybe I’m becoming a reader after all.
