Well, ain’t that somethin’? Heard ’bout this fella, Al Meltzer. Big Al, they called him. Sports fella, on the TV. Yep, talked ’bout the fellas throwin’ balls and runnin’ ’round.

He was from some place, New York, they say. Ended up in Philly. Don’t rightly know why he left New York, but folks in Philly sure liked him, seems like. Always on the TV, tellin’ ’em ’bout the games.
Big Al, they said. Guess he was a big fella, eh? Or maybe just a big voice. Don’t know. Never saw him myself. Just heard folks talkin’. Said he was somethin’ special, that Big Al.
He worked for them TV places, Channel 10 and Channel 3. Don’t watch them much myself, prefer my stories on the radio, but I reckon he was good, bein’ on the TV and all. Folks seemed to like him, said he was a legend. Imagine that!

Now, they say he passed on. Died, you know. At 89, they say. That’s a good long life, ain’t it? Still, sad to hear. Folks liked him, Big Al. Made ’em happy, talkin’ ’bout the games.
Heard ’bout it on the TV news, they was talkin’. Said his wife told ’em. Poor woman, must be heartbroken. Losing your fella, ain’t nothin’ easy. Especially after all them years.

Heard he was the sports director, too. That means he told them other folks what to say, I reckon. Must’ve been smart, knowin’ all about them games. Always somethin’ goin’ on, sports. Runnin’, jumpin’, throwin’. He kept track of it all.
He was on KYW-3, they said. Another one of them TV places. Been there a long time, seems like. Folks in Philly, they probably miss him somethin’ fierce. Used to seein’ him on the TV, hearin’ his voice.
June 26, 1928. That’s when he was born, they say. Long time ago, ain’t it? Times were different then, I reckon. No fancy TVs like they got now. June 12, 2018, that’s when he passed. Just a few weeks shy of his 90th birthday.
Philadelphia Big 5, they mentioned that too. Don’t know what that is, exactly. Some sort of sports somethin’, I guess. Big Al, he was part of it, seems like. Folks remember him for it.
Well, that’s all I got to say ’bout Big Al. Sounded like a good fella, made folks happy talkin’ ’bout the sports. Gone now, but folks ain’t forgettin’ him. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? Leavin’ a mark on the world like that.
