Well, folks, if you live around here in Greene County, you’ve probably heard of the Greene County Daily World, right? It’s that newspaper folks rely on to keep up with what’s going on in the area, whether it’s news about the schools, the local fire department, or even those sad obituaries that remind us how short life is. The newspaper’s been around for ages, and it’s still serving its purpose, just like it did back when it was first started. I reckon a lot of folks in town don’t really know the full story behind it, though, so I’m here to give you the rundown, plain and simple, like I would tell ya while sittin’ on my front porch with a cup of tea in hand.
Now, the Greene County Daily World didn’t always have this name. Nope, it used to go by the Linton Daily Citizen and the Bloomfield Evening World, but folks around here just call it the Daily World, and that’s good enough for me. It first got its start back in 1905. Can you believe it? A whole century and more of bringing news to the people of Greene County. Back in those days, the paper wasn’t printed on fancy presses like today. It was probably just a few folks with ink-stained hands and a lot of stories to tell.
The thing I appreciate about the paper is it keeps us up-to-date on all kinds of local happenings. Whether it’s news about a fire in Linton, like what happened a few days ago when the Linton Fire Department worked with the Greene County Ambulance service to take care of an emergency, or whether it’s about some local event, you can always count on the Daily World to be there. And let me tell you, it’s a lifeline for people like me who don’t have fancy internet and can’t always make it to the town hall meetings. The paper brings it right to your doorstep, just like a good neighbor would.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ that it’s just about news. Oh no, the Daily World does a whole lot more than that. They’ve got these special pages, called We Remember, where you can honor your loved ones who’ve passed. A lot of folks around here find comfort in that, seeing their family members’ names in the paper one last time. It’s like a little piece of them stays behind, even after they’re gone. You can visit these memorial pages and see who’s passed away, read their stories, and sometimes even share a memory of your own.
Speaking of memories, the Daily World keeps folks up-to-date on all the important local events, too. For example, just the other day, they announced that the Greene County Wellness Fair was coming up, offering free health screenings. I don’t know about you, but free health screenings are a big deal around here. If you don’t have insurance or you can’t afford to go to the doctor, these kinds of events can really make a difference. I’ve gone to a few myself over the years. You just show up, get checked out, and they give you some advice on how to take care of yourself.
And that’s not all, no ma’am. The Daily World also talks about the graduates, like when they told us about the two young folks from Greene County who graduated back in 2022, Allison Welch and Austin Landis. It’s always nice to see our young folks gettin’ a shout-out in the paper. Makes you proud to see them go off and do big things, even if it’s just across town or a few counties over.
Folks around here don’t always have the luxury of sittin’ in front of a computer screen all day, so that’s why the Daily World is so important. It’s a paper that gets right to the heart of the community. They make sure you know what’s going on—whether it’s the latest weather, school news, or some big event in the town. And even when there’s something hard to hear, like an obituary or a tragedy, the paper makes sure to give folks a place to remember and honor those they’ve lost. I can’t think of many places that do that as well as they do.
So, the next time you pick up your copy of the Greene County Daily World, just remember, it’s more than just a piece of paper. It’s a lifeline, a way to stay connected to everything that matters around here. From local news to community events, to remembering loved ones, this little paper does it all. And as long as it’s around, it’s gonna keep bringing us the news we need, just like it’s done for over a hundred years.
