Alright so here’s the deal. I finally dragged myself to Firehouse Health Center yesterday. First time ever. Felt kinda stupid not knowing the drill, right? Wanted to just show up and wing it. Spoiler alert: Bad idea.
Step One: Figuring Out The Phone Part
Grabbed my phone Tuesday morning. Welp, I chickened out. Called Wednesday instead. Seriously, just dialed the main number on their site.

- Got the menu maze: Press 1 for new patients, press 2 if you’re dying, press 3 to get lost… okay maybe not that last one. Hit the new patient button.
- Hold music: Classic. Sounded like a broken elevator. Took maybe 5 minutes? Felt longer.
- The chat: Nice lady finally answered. Asked my name, date of birth, basic stuff. Key thing? Needed my insurance card IN FRONT of me. Fumbled for it while talking. Mega awkward. She booked me for Thursday, 2 PM. Sent some sign-up link via text later.
Step Two: The Pre-Game Paperwork
Clicked that text link Wednesday night. Oh boy.
- Digital mountain: Filled out forms like my life depended on it. Medical history? Check. Allergies? Check. Like, 20 pages worth. Felt like a test.
- Insurance upload: Took pics of both sides of my insurance card. Hopefully clear enough.
Step Three: The Actual Visit Day
Rolled up Thursday. Building looked older but clean.
- Parking: Found the “Patient Lot” around back. Easy peasy.
- Check-in desk: Walked up to the lady behind the glass. Said “First time, name’s [My Name]. Here for 2 PM.”
- The surprise: She smiled. Handed me this clipboard with TWO MORE PAPER SHEETS. “Just sign these real quick for consent and financial stuff.” Paperwork pile taller than my kid. Signed where she pointed. Handed it back.
- The wait: Sat down in the waiting room. Not too crowded. Read my phone. Waited… maybe 15 minutes? Felt like forever though.
Step Four: Getting Called Back
Nurse lady poked her head out. Called my name. Followed her down this hall.
- Height/Weight: Got on the scale. Hated that part. Then stood against the wall thing for height.
- Blood Pressure: She wrapped that cuff around my arm. Tightened up. Weird buzzing noise. She wrote down numbers.
- The room: Then she took me to this little room. Basic chair, exam table, sink. Told me “Doc will be in soon.” Left. Clock ticked. Another 10 minutes? Doctor knocked.
Step Five: The Actual Doctor Part
Doc came in. Younger guy. Nice enough.
- The chat: He asked what brought me in. Laid it out. Asked questions about my history. Actually looked at the stuff I filled online!
- The check-up: Did the basic poking and prodding. Throat? Said “Ahh.” Listened to my lungs. Checked my ears.
- Diagnosis/Plan: Talked about what might be wrong (sinus infection, yay). Prescription sent straight to my usual pharmacy near home.
Step Six: Paying and Leaving
Doctor left. Nurse came back after a few minutes.
- Instructions: Told me what to do after (rest, fluids, pick up meds).
- Desk duty: Sent me back to the main counter near the entrance.
- The Money Bit: Lady behind the glass typed some stuff. Printed a paper. “Copay today is $25 please.” Swiped my card. Got a receipt. Said “Feel better!” Paid and left. Done.
