So, I’ve been meaning to get into better shape, and I figured, why not try something completely new? I’ve always been kind of clumsy, never really the “sports” type, you know? But I decided to give “officially sports” a shot – whatever that means, right? I just wanted to move my body more.
First, I googled “easy sports for beginners”. Yeah, very original, I know. A bunch of stuff popped up – swimming, cycling, jogging… all sounded exhausting. Then I saw something about “pickleball”. Never heard of it, but the name sounded funny, so I clicked.

The Pickleball Discovery
Turns out, pickleball is like a mix of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Played on a smaller court with paddles and a wiffle ball. Seemed less intimidating than full-on tennis, so I decided to give it a try.
Next step: finding a place to play. My local community center had courts, and even better, they had a “beginners’ night”. Perfect! I signed up online, feeling both excited and terrified.
The First Awkward Steps
That first night… wow. I felt like a total goofball. I missed the ball more times than I hit it. I tripped over my own feet (more than once!). But you know what? Everyone else was pretty bad too! There was this one lady who kept hitting the ball over the fence, and a guy who accidentally whacked his partner with the paddle. We were all a mess, but we were laughing so hard.
- Embarrassment level: High.
- Fun level: Surprisingly high!
Getting the Hang of It (Sort Of)
I kept going back, week after week. Slowly, I started to get the hang of it. I learned how to serve (underhand, thank goodness!). I figured out how to dink (that’s a soft shot, apparently). I even won a few points! Okay, maybe more than a few. It was a rush!
It’s not about being perfect, it’s about moving, laughing, and having a good time. I’m still no pro, but I’m officially a “sports” person now. I’m the person who plays pickleball. And that feels pretty darn good. And, bonus, I’m not as sore as I thought I’d be. Win-win!
