Okay, so “HR Derby” – sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a shot. I’m always looking for ways to spice up my work, you know?
First, I googled what exactly “HR Derby” even meant. Turns out, it’s kind of like a fun competition, but for HR stuff. Think of it like a baseball home run derby, but instead of hitting balls, you’re “hitting” HR tasks.

I decided to create my own little version of this. I grabbed a whiteboard and wrote down some common HR tasks:
- Onboarding a new employee
- Handling a leave request
- Resolving a minor conflict between coworkers
- Updating employee records
- Posting a job opening
Then, I set up a timer. The goal was to see how quickly I could theoretically complete each task. Not actually do them, but walk through the steps in my head and map out the process. It’s all about speed and efficiency, right?
I started with “onboarding a new employee.” I imagined going through the paperwork, setting up their accounts, introducing them to the team – the whole shebang. I timed myself, trying to be as quick and efficient as possible, like a well-oiled machine.
I did the same for each task, jotting down my “times” on the whiteboard. It was actually kind of fun, trying to beat my own previous “record.” Plus, it got me thinking about how I could streamline some of these processes in real life.
The Results
After going through all the tasks, I looked at my “times.” Some were pretty good, others… not so much. It showed me where I could use some improvement. It also gave me some ideas for new tools or strategies to make things go faster.
Overall, it was a fun little experiment! I might even try to make this a regular thing, maybe once a month or so. It’s a good way to keep my skills sharp and find new ways to improve my HR game. You all should give a try!
