Today, I wanna talk about how I made some cabinets for my kitchen. It was a wild ride, let me tell you.
So, first things first, I started by marking up the wall where the cabinets were gonna go. I guess this is like, super important or whatever. Every good cabinet installation starts with this, or so I’ve heard. Gotta make sure everything’s level and lined up right, otherwise, you’re gonna have a bad time. I used a level and a pencil to mark where the top and bottom of the cabinets would be. And, like, I measured everything a million times ’cause I didn’t wanna mess it up.

Then, I started putting the cabinets together. I had bought some flat-pack ones from the store, ’cause I’m not made of money. This part was kinda fun, actually. It was like building with giant LEGOs. The instructions were mostly pictures, which was good ’cause I don’t like reading a lot. I just followed the steps and screwed everything together. The most important thing during the whole procedure, I think, is to get accurate measurements. You must be careful with it.
Hanging them up
-
After that, I had to hang them up on the wall. This was the trickiest part, I’m not gonna lie. I got my neighbor to help me ’cause those suckers are heavy. We lifted them up and held them against the wall while I screwed them into the studs. It was a bit of a workout, but we managed.
Putting on the doors
-
Once the cabinets were up, I put on the doors. This was pretty easy, just screwing on the hinges and then attaching the doors to the cabinets. I did have a little trouble getting the doors to line up perfectly, but I eventually figured it out. A friend of mine who did similar things before told me that a good installer should know how to use and sharpen hand planes and chisels.
And that’s pretty much it! It took me a whole weekend, but I finally got it done. I’m pretty proud of myself, not gonna lie. They’re not perfect, but they’re mine, and they work. Now I have a bunch more storage space in my kitchen, which is awesome. Plus, I saved a ton of money by doing it myself. Overall, I’d say making cabinets is not a difficult thing. If you have a basic knowledge of woodworking there is no reason why a cabinet build should worry you. Just take it one step at a time. If you’re thinking about doing something similar, I’d say go for it! Just be prepared to put in some work. Also, be prepared to yell at inanimate objects when things get frustrating. Hope this helps someone out there!
