Okay, so today I wanted to try something new, and I got hooked on this crossword puzzle from the New York Times. The theme was “like sports at the X Games.” It sounded pretty cool, right? I’m not really into extreme sports, but I do enjoy a good brain teaser.
I started by reading the introduction. This is actually from a third crossword from this author, Laura Dershewitz. She seems to know her stuff. I opened up the NYT crossword app on my phone, that’s how I usually do them anyway. It took a second to load. I noticed right away that the puzzle was a bit different from the usual ones. They had some clues that were related to X Games sports, but the whole thing wasn’t just about that. It was kind of mixed in with regular crossword clues.

I began by trying to fill in the answers I knew right away. Stuff like common words, some phrases I recognized. The X Games clues were definitely trickier. I had to think about words that would fit the descriptions. I even searched a little bit. There are 25 answers and 100 possible answers I found for “like sports at the x games” crossword clue online. I didn’t want to cheat too much, though. The fun is in figuring it out, you know?
There were a couple of clues that really stumped me. Like, one was asking for a word that meant “beginner” or something like that, in gamer lingo, and it had four letters. Turns out the answer was “tyro,” which I had never even heard of before! And there was also a clue for “practice game” in sports, these are some real tough ones.
I kept going at it, taking breaks here and there. My brain needed to rest sometimes! I also did some daily reading about the X Games. It’s really all about adrenaline and mental challenges. Gradually, I started to fill in more and more of the puzzle. It was pretty satisfying to see the grid filling up. I made it a daily crossword puzzles challenge for me.
Finally, after a good while, I managed to complete the whole thing! It felt great to solve it. I might not be an X Games expert now, but I definitely learned some new words and had a good time exercising my brain. I think I’ll keep trying these themed puzzles. They’re a fun change of pace from the usual ones. Plus, it’s a good way to learn about new things, even if it’s just trivia about extreme sports. And maybe follow along with the news of The New York Times’ popular puzzle game, Connections: Sports Edition.
So yeah, that was my little adventure with the “like sports at the X Games” crossword. It was challenging, but also really rewarding. If you like word puzzles, I’d definitely recommend giving it a shot. Just be prepared to learn some new slang and maybe do a little bit of Googling!
