Alright, so the other day I decided to check out Disney World. I’d heard so much about it, figured it was time to see what the fuss was all about. I packed my bags, booked a room at one of their resorts, and off I went. Everything was going great, I mean, it’s Disney, right? Magic everywhere, characters walking around, the whole nine yards.
But then, bam! In the middle of the afternoon, the power went out. And I’m not just talking about a flicker or a quick outage. We’re talking full-on darkness in some areas, rides stopping, and everyone looking around like, “What just happened?” It was pretty wild.

I was staying at the Port Orleans Resort. I was relaxing in my room, enjoying the AC, and checking out some stuff online when the lights went out. My first thought was, “Okay, maybe it’s just my room?” But nope, I went outside, and it was the same deal everywhere. No lights, no internet, nothing. People were confused, some were annoyed, and kids were, well, being kids.
Stuck in the Dark
The first thing I did was try to find out what was going on. I headed over to the front desk, and there was already a crowd there. Everyone had the same idea. The staff were doing their best, but it was clear they didn’t have much info either. They were saying it was a widespread outage and that it affected other resorts too. I heard someone mention that even the monorail and ferryboats had stopped working. I mean, how are you supposed to get around?
- Stay Put or Explore? I had a decision to make. Do I stay at the resort and hope the power comes back on soon, or do I try to make my way to one of the parks? I figured the parks might have backup generators or something.
- Gathering Intel I started talking to other guests, trying to get a sense of what was happening elsewhere. Some folks said they heard it was just a temporary thing, others were saying it could be hours. There was a lot of speculation going around.
- Making a Plan I decided to head to one of the parks. I figured, worst case scenario, I’d be stuck there, but at least I’d be in the middle of the action. I grabbed my backpack, made sure I had some water and snacks, and started walking.
The Great Trek
Now, walking around Disney World when everything’s up and running is one thing. Walking around when there’s no power is a whole different ball game. It was kind of eerie, to be honest. But it was also kind of cool in a weird way. I mean, how often do you get to see Disney like this?
I finally made it to Magic Kingdom, and it was the same story there. Power was out in some areas, but not everywhere. It seemed like they were running on some sort of backup system. I saw some rides were still operating, but a lot of the food places and shops were closed. I managed to find a spot that was serving food, grabbed a bite, and just kind of took it all in.
Eventually, after a few hours, the power started coming back on. It was gradual, like they were flipping switches one by one. But it was progress. By the evening, most things were back to normal, but it was definitely an experience. It’s not every day you get to see Disney World in a whole new light, or lack of light, I should say.
So, that’s my story of the great Disney World power outage. It wasn’t exactly how I pictured my trip going, but hey, it made for a good story, right? And it just goes to show, even in the most magical place on earth, things can still go a little haywire sometimes. I still enjoyed my trip overall, but that day will definitely be one I remember. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, just stay calm, make a plan, and maybe you’ll even find a little bit of unexpected adventure along the way. Just make sure to turn off your appliances. You don’t want to cause any trouble.
