Alright, let’s talk about this “sports goal material” thing, like those puzzles in the newspaper my grandson sometimes shows me. Confuses the heck outta me, but I’ll try. So, they want a word for what them goals are made of, right? Like, what stuff you use to build a thing you kick a ball into. Sounds simple enough, but these puzzle folks, they like makin’ things tricky, ya know?
What could it be? Well, back in my day, we just used whatever we had around. Sometimes it was just sticks and some old cloth. But I reckon they ain’t lookin’ for “sticks and cloth.” They want somethin’ fancy, somethin’ you’d see in a real game, like on that there TV thing.

Now, I ain’t never been to one of them big city games, but I seen ‘em on TV. The goals, they look kinda shiny, so maybe it’s somethin’ metal? Or maybe somethin’ strong, gotta be tough to take all that kickin’ and bangin’. My grandson, he told me once somethin’ about “nets.” Yeah, nets! They gotta be in there somewhere, right? Can’t have a goal without a net, that’s for sure. So maybe “net” is part of the answer, or maybe it’s the whole thing. Who knows with these puzzle people?
Let’s see, what else they got in them goals? I seen some white posts sometimes, and sometimes they black. Maybe they made of wood? But wood don’t seem right for a fancy game. Probably somethin’ stronger, like I said. Maybe it’s that… uh… what’s that stuff called? Starts with an “S.” Steel? Yeah, steel! That sounds about right. Steel posts, maybe steel bars? Sounds like somethin’ a goal would be made of. Strong and sturdy, just like it needs to be.
And that net, gotta be somethin’ tough too. Can’t just be any old net. Gotta be strong enough to stop that ball without rippin’. My grandson says they are made from nylon or some such thing. Sounds fancy but i reckon it does the job. Keeps them balls from flyin’ into the crowd or out in the street.
- So, we got steel maybe.
- We got nets for sure.
- And maybe some other stuff too, like posts and bars.
But if they want just one word, that’s where it gets tricky. It could be “steel,” could be “net,” could be somethin’ else entirely. Maybe it’s “mesh”? That’s what my grandson calls the net sometimes. Or maybe it’s a fancy word for the whole darn thing put together. Like I said, these puzzle folks like to make things complicated.
Another thing I am thinking is… they could be lookin’ for different words dependin’ on what kinda sport they’re talkin’ ’bout. Like, a hockey goal is different from a soccer goal, right? And them basketball hoops… well them ain’t really goals I guess. They mostly just a ring and a little net. So maybe the answer is different for each sport. See? It just keeps gettin’ more and more complicated!
Now my grandson, he is always on that phone of his, lookin’ up stuff. He says there are websites that give you answers to these crossword things. I don’t get it myself. Seems like cheatin’ to me, but he says everyone does it. He even showed me once, typed in somethin’ like “sports goal material crossword” and a whole bunch of words came up. He says some folks call it “crossword solver” or some such thing.
So, if I was doin’ this puzzle, and I was stuck, and I wasn’t above a little cheatin’, I might just ask him to look it up. But I ain’t doin’ that. I am gonna try to figure it out myself, even if it takes all day. Or maybe I’ll just go bake a pie. That sounds a whole lot easier than this puzzle business. Pies I understand. Flour, sugar, apples… nice and simple. No tricks, no fancy words.

But see, that’s the thing with these puzzles, ain’t it? They make you think. And sometimes, that’s a good thing, even if it’s a little frustrating. So, let’s see… sports goal material… Steel? Net? Mesh? Posts? Bars? One of them has to be right, right? Or maybe it’s all of ‘em together. Or maybe it’s somethin’ completely different I ain’t even thought of yet. Well, I guess I’ll just keep ponderin’ on it, while I’m bakin’ that pie. Maybe the answer will come to me, like a good recipe, when I least expect it.
And if it don’t, well, there’s always more important things in life than some silly crossword puzzle. Like a good cup of coffee and a warm piece of pie. That’s what I say, anyhow.
One last thought now… maybe they want the word “rope”. Nets are kinda made of rope ain’t they? Or maybe the word is “fiber” since that’s what the net is made of. See? I am getting good at this puzzle thing. Maybe I should start doing them myself. But then again, I reckon I’d rather just stick to my pies. They are a lot less trouble, and they always turn out right.
Alright, I’m done with this puzzle nonsense. My head is spinning, and I still don’t know the right answer. Maybe it’s one of them words I already said, maybe it’s somethin’ else entirely. But one thing’s for sure, this old woman ain’t gonna worry about it no more. I got a pie to bake, and that’s a whole lot more important than some crossword puzzle.
