Well, let me tell ya ’bout this thing with the five rings, you know, the sports thing. It’s a big deal, they say. Lots of folks get all worked up about it.

What is this five-ring thing anyway?
I heard it’s called the Olympics or somethin’. Sounds fancy, huh? They got all sorts of games, runnin’, jumpin’, swimmin’, you name it. And this here logo, it’s got five rings, all tangled up together. They say each one is for a different part of the world. Like, you know, different countries and places. Blue, yellow, black, green, and red, them’s the colors. On a white background, makes it pop, I guess. Someone told me a fella named Coubertin came up with it way back when, like in 1913. That’s a long time ago, even before I was born, and that’s sayin’ somethin’!
Why all the fuss?
Beats me. But they say it’s important. Like, the best of the best come from all over to play these games. And everyone watches, on them TV things, or maybe they even go there in person. I seen some of it on the TV once. All them young folks runnin’ around. Made me tired just watchin’!
It’s a symbol, they say.

- Like, when you see them rings, you know it’s the Olympics.
- Just like when you see that golden arches, you know it’s them burgers.
- Or that swoosh thing, that’s shoes, right?
This five-ring thing is the same, for the sports. They say it’s a famous trademark, property of some group called the IOC. They own it, like a farmer owns his land. Nobody else can use it, or they’ll get in trouble, I reckon. And they first showed it off in 1913, can you believe it? Then they made a flag with it in 1914, in Paris. Heard Paris is a fancy place too, never been there myself.
It’s everywhere, seems like.
You see it on shirts, on hats, on TV, everywhere you look when the games are on. They even got a little mascot critter sometimes. Like that octopus thing for that hockey team in Detroit. Folks throw them octopuses on the ice, for luck, they say. Crazy, right? But this five-ring thing, it’s not just for one team. It’s for the whole shebang, all them games, all them countries.
People try to guess it.
I heard folks even play games with it. Like them crossword puzzles. They got clues like “sporting organization with a five-ring logo” and you gotta figure out it’s the Olympics or the IOC or somethin’. Thirty different answers, they say. Seems like a lot of fuss for a few rings, but what do I know? I just grow my tomatoes and mind my own business.

It’s supposed to mean something.
They say it’s about the world coming together, and all that good stuff. And that the rings mean the continents: Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. All them places, all mixed up together like a big ol’ stew. Sounds nice, I guess. But mostly I just see a bunch of young folks runnin’ and jumpin’. But hey, if it makes folks happy, who am I to judge? They tested it on folks this summer too. Seems everybody knows them rings when they see ‘em.
So, there you have it. That’s all I know about this five-ring sports thing. It’s a big deal, a symbol, and it’s been around a long time. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go water my plants.
