Alright, let’s gab a bit about what them folks in Peru like to do for fun, you know, the sporty stuff. I hear tell it’s a lot like what my grandkids are into, but with a bit of a different flavor, if you catch my drift.

The Big Kahuna: Football, or Soccer, Whatever You Call It
Now, the biggest thing, the one everybody and their grandma cares about, is that football game. You know, the one with the ball you kick around? Some folks call it soccer, but whatever you name it, them Peruvians are plumb crazy about it. It’s like their bread and butter, their meat and potatoes, you get the picture. I heard tell it ain’t just for the young’uns neither. Old folks, young folks, men, women, everybody’s kickin’ that ball around. They say it makes ’em proud, like when you bake a pie that turns out just right.
- They got this team, the national team, they call it “La Blanquirroja.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? Means “the white-red” I reckon, like a flag or somethin’.
- And they ain’t just playin’ for kicks neither. They got these big tournaments, like the World Cup. Heard tell Peru’s been in that thing five times! That’s a lot, ain’t it?
- They even won some cups, called Copa America, back in the day. 1939 and 1975, if my memory serves me right. That was a long time ago, but folks still talk about it, like it was yesterday.
Seems like everybody’s got their favorite team too. Alianza, Sporting Cristal, Universitario… Sounds like a bunch of fancy names to me, but they’re real important over there. It’s like pickin’ your favorite flavor of ice cream, everybody’s got their own.
Other Stuff They Get Up To
Now, football ain’t the only thing them Peruvians are good at. They got a whole mess of other sports they like to play. I heard tell of somethin’ called taekwondo. Sounds like a lot of kickin’ and yellin’, if you ask me. Then there’s rugby, which seems kinda rough, like them fellas just runnin’ into each other. And volleyball, where they smack a ball over a net. My niece used to play that in school, real good she was.

They even got tennis, you know, with the rackets and the little fuzzy balls? And surfing! Now that’s somethin’ I can’t wrap my head around. Ridin’ them big waves, must be scary as all get out. But I guess some folks like that kinda thing.
Something You Probably Never Heard Of
And then there’s this one sport, somethin’ called paleta frontón. Never heard of it in my life, but apparently, it’s a Peruvian thing. Started in Lima, the capital city, way back in 1945. Sounds like them Spaniards brought over somethin’ called “pelota vasca” and the Peruvians mixed it with their own game called “pelota mano” and made somethin’ new. Don’t ask me how to play it, I ain’t got a clue, but it sounds kinda interestin’, don’t it?
So, there you have it. That’s what I know about sports in Peru. Mostly football, but a whole bunch of other stuff too. Seems like them folks like to stay busy, just like us, only they do it with a bit more… Peruvian flair, I guess you could say. They’re passionate about their teams, proud of their players, and always up for a good game. Just like us, when we get together for a picnic and a game of horseshoes, only a bit fancier, maybe.
And let me tell you, it don’t matter if it’s kickin’ a ball, hittin’ a ball with a racket, or ridin’ a wave. The important thing is gettin’ out there, movin’ around, and havin’ a good time. That’s somethin’ we can all understand, no matter where we come from.

Anyway, that’s the gist of it. Them Peruvians, they like their sports just fine, same as anybody else, just different kinds sometimes. Makes you think, don’t it?
