Well, let me tell ya, this whole health care thing, it’s a real head-scratcher. Is it cheaper in McAllen, Texas? That’s what they’re askin’, right? I heard some folks sayin’ one thing, some sayin’ another. Makes an old woman like me dizzy trying to figure it all out.

So, is McAllen cheap or not? I ain’t no fancy doctor or anything, but I hear things. Some city folks, they say McAllen is cheap to live in, ya know? Like groceries and stuff. They got some number, like 86, and they say the whole country is 100. Don’t ask me what that means, but they say it means McAllen is cheaper for livin’.
But then you hear about this health care, and it’s a whole different story. One fella told me McAllen is one of the most expensive places for health stuff. Can ya believe it? Cheaper to live, but more expensive to get fixed up if you’re sick. Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me.
They talk about insurance, all these fancy names and plans. Blue Cross, Blue Shield, this “ACA” thing… I swear, it’s enough to make your head spin. They say you gotta find a plan, gotta pay a “premium,” whatever that is. And then they say even with the insurance, sometimes you still gotta pay a whole lot outta your own pocket.
I heard someone sayin’ that in McAllen, the insurance folks, they pay the doctors and hospitals a little bit less than in other places. Like, 7 percent less, they said. But does that make it cheaper for us regular folks? I ain’t so sure. Seems like the prices still go up and up, no matter what.
- They say health care prices in Texas are goin’ up like a rocket.
- And that family insurance, the kind you get from your job, it costs a whole heap of money. More than $22,000 a year, someone told me. That’s more money than I’ve seen in my whole life!
- And if you don’t have insurance from your job? Well, then you gotta go find one of them ACA plans, and that’s a whole other can of worms. You gotta go online, put in your “zip code” and your “estimated income,” and then they show you all these plans with different prices.
It’s all so complicated. You gotta compare this plan and that plan, figure out what they cover and what they don’t. And then you gotta hope you don’t get sick, ’cause even with insurance, it can still cost you a fortune. Makes you wonder if it’s even worth it.

I heard some folks sayin’ they go to Mexico for their health care. Said it’s cheaper down there. Can you imagine? Having to leave the country just to see a doctor or get some medicine. It’s a sad state of affairs, I tell ya.
So, what’s the answer? Is health care cheaper in McAllen, Texas? I wish I knew. It seems like it depends on who you ask and what you’re lookin’ for. Maybe it’s cheaper for some things, but more expensive for others. Maybe it’s cheaper if you have good insurance, but more expensive if you don’t. It’s all a big ol’ mess, if you ask me.
One thing’s for sure, though. Health care costs are a big problem for folks everywhere, not just in McAllen. It’s somethin’ the politicians oughta be fixin’, instead of squabblin’ amongst themselves all the time. But don’t get me started on that, or I’ll be here all day!
Anyways, that’s what I’ve heard about this McAllen health care situation. Take it with a grain of salt, though, ’cause like I said, I ain’t no expert. Just an old woman tryin’ to make sense of it all.
And one more thing, if you do gotta go to the doctor in McAllen, or anywhere for that matter, be prepared to wait. They got these “wait times,” and sometimes you gotta sit there for hours just to see the doctor for a few minutes. It’s a real pain, but what can you do? That’s just the way things are these days.

So, good luck to ya, tryin’ to figure out this whole health care mess. And if you find any answers, be sure to let me know. I’m all ears, that’s for sure.
