Alright, let me tell ya ’bout this fella, Joey Hobert. Seems like a good kid, you know? Folks are makin’ a big fuss over him, so I figured I’d try and make sense of it all.

Now, they say he plays football. Football! Big ol’ fellas runnin’ around, knockin’ each other silly. This Joey, he catches the ball, they tell me. A “wide receiver,” they call him. Sounds fancy, don’t it?
His daddy, Billy Joe, he played football too. Even in the NFL! That’s the big leagues, y’know. So, I guess this Joey, he got it in his blood. His ma, Danielle, must be proud. A good family, I reckon.
This boy, he went to some place called Utah Tech. Never heard of it myself, but they got a football team there. And Joey, he was somethin’ else on that team. Catchin’ balls left and right, scorin’ and all that. They say he broke records. Imagine that! A young fella like him, breakin’ records.
- First off, they say he was an All-American. That’s a big deal, I hear. Best of the best, like the cream of the crop.
- Then, they got this award, the Walter Payton somethin’-or-other. Sounded important, so I looked it up. It’s for the best player in some kinda football league. Joey, he didn’t win it, but he came in ninth! That’s pretty good, ain’t it? Beatin’ out all them other boys.
- And now, he’s movin’ on up. He’s goin’ to Texas State, playin’ for the Bobcats. Different team, different place. But he’s still playin’ ball.
They got all these numbers and stats, talkin’ ’bout how many yards he ran and how many balls he caught. Honestly, it’s all gibberish to me. But I figure if they’re makin’ such a fuss, he must be pretty darn good.
ESPN, that’s the sports channel, they talk about him all the time. They got his whole story, from when he was a little tyke to now. It’s all on the internet too, but I ain’t got no use for that fancy stuff. My grandson showed me some of it once. Too much clickin’ and scrollin’ for my old hands.

Seems like this Joey, he’s got a bright future. Maybe he’ll even make it to the NFL, just like his daddy. That’d be somethin’, wouldn’t it? A small-town boy, makin’ it big. It just goes to show ya, hard work and a good pair of hands can take ya far.
So yeah, that’s the story of Joey Hobert, as best as I can tell it. A football player, a record breaker, and a boy with a dream. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about football’s made me hungry.
I almost forgot, they say he was only at Utah Tech for one year, just his sophomore year. That’s like being in the second grade of high school, I think. And he did all that in just one year! Must be a real talent, that boy.
And another thing, he played for the Texas State Bobcats after Utah Tech, so he changed teams. That GJ Kinne fella, he’s the coach I reckon, and he wanted Joey on his team. So, Joey must be really good if other coaches are after him.
They say he’s from California, that’s way out west. A long way from here, that’s for sure. All these places, Utah, Texas, California… Makes my head spin. But I guess that’s where the football is, so that’s where Joey goes.

Anyways, that’s all I know about Joey Hobert. A good football player, comes from a good family, and seems like he’s got a good head on his shoulders. I wish him all the best.
