Well, I’ll tell ya, finding the best gin in the world ain’t like pickin’ apples off a tree. It’s a whole lot harder! They got these fancy competitions and all, where they give out medals like they’re candy.
I heard tell some gins even got themselves “Double Gold” medals. Don’t rightly know what that means, but it sounds important, like winnin’ a blue ribbon at the county fair, but bigger.
This year, some of them winners were a gin called Gale Force, they say it’s the best London Dry Gin. Then there’s Ohoro, that’s the best Classic Gin, whatever that is. And Maral, they make the best Sloe Gin, sounds kinda fruity, don’t it? These folks must be doin’ somethin’ right, makin’ gin that good.
They even got somethin’ called a Gin Hall of Fame. Sounds mighty fancy! It’s for folks who’ve spent their whole lives messin’ with gin, must love the stuff a whole heap.
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I know what I like. And when it comes to makin’ one of them Negroni drinks, them fancy folks say you gotta use a London Dry Gin. That’s the only kind they’ll touch, I reckon it’s gotta be strong and not too sweet, the way a good drink should be.
They say this London Dry Gin started way back in the 1800s in London, that big city across the water. Guess they knew a thing or two about makin’ good liquor back then.
So, what makes a gin the best?
Well, it’s gotta taste good, that’s for sure. Not too bitter, not too sweet, just right. And it’s gotta be smooth, go down easy. Nobody wants a gin that burns your throat like fire, unless maybe you’re tryin’ to keep warm on a cold night.
- Taste: It needs that good juniper flavor, that’s what makes gin, gin. But it can’t be too much, it’s gotta have a balance. Some gins got other stuff in ‘em too, like citrus or spices. That can be nice, but it’s gotta be done right.
- Smell: A good gin should smell nice, not like somethin’ you’d clean the floor with. It should have a fresh smell, maybe a little bit like pine trees or flowers.
- Smoothness: Like I said, it can’t burn your throat. It should go down smooth and easy. A good gin is like silk, not sandpaper.
Finding the “best” is a matter of taste, I reckon. What one person likes, another might not. It’s like pickin’ out a good watermelon, you gotta thump a few ‘til you find the one that sounds right.
But if you’re lookin’ for a good place to start, you could try one of them award winners. Or you could just ask around, see what other folks are drinkin’. Chances are, if a lot of people like it, it’s gotta be pretty good.
Just remember, drinkin’ gin is supposed to be enjoyable, not a chore. So don’t get too caught up in all the fancy talk. Just find somethin’ you like and enjoy it.
