Ah, politics, it’s like that old dirty thing nobody wants to touch but everyone’s scared to ignore. Ain’t it funny how folks keep talking ’bout it, even though they know it ain’t gonna do no good? Politics, they say, is evil—well, if that’s what you believe, you ain’t alone. Been like this for ages. You see, back in the day, in 1642 to be exact, a man named Thomas Fuller talked about how people thought a jester was a “necessary evil” in a court. Well, politicians? Same thing, just a fancy title. You can’t live with ’em, and you can’t live without ’em, right?

Now, in the good ol’ days of Common Sense, Thomas Paine went on to say that government itself was a “necessary evil.” He weren’t wrong, you know. Ain’t nobody in their right mind likes paying taxes or following all them rules that make no sense. But somehow, we all keep on going, ’cause what’s the alternative? Anarchy, maybe? Or worse yet, no one to tell us what to do, and you know how folks get when they ain’t got nobody tellin’ ’em what’s right and wrong.
But let me tell you, politics is real sneaky. It ain’t all about the good stuff, like solving problems. No, sir. It’s got its fair share of dirty tricks too. Folks like to say it’s the “art or science of government,” but I reckon that’s just a fancy way of sayin’ how to make everyone else think you know what you’re doin’. And while there are some good folks out there tryin’ to make things right, there’s a lot more just out for themselves. That’s the evil part. They smile and shake hands, but deep down, they’re only lookin’ out for number one.
Don’t believe me? Just look at how folks tear each other down during elections. They’ll find anything, even the tiniest mistake, and blow it up like it’s the end of the world. They’ve been doin’ it since ancient Athens when Cleon slandered Pericles. Same game, different players. All they care about is getting more power, even if they gotta twist the truth and play dirty to do it.
And then there’s the violence. You heard about those ballot boxes being burned up, or folks shootin’ windows out in Arizona, right? That ain’t nothing new. Politics has always had a dark side to it. People get so riled up, they forget the difference between right and wrong. Politics becomes a game of who’s got the loudest voice, and if you don’t agree, well, they’ll make sure you’re scared to even speak up.
Folks are so divided now, it’s hard to see where the truth lies. People hate each other over politics more than ever. It’s like a never-ending fight that gets worse the more you dig into it. You got conservatives calling liberals stupid, and liberals thinking conservatives are just plain evil. Can’t nobody get along anymore. That’s the harm of it—outrage politics. The louder you shout, the more power you got, and it’s a real ugly way to live.

All this talk about narcissism and nihilism in politics, well, I ain’t sure if it’s the biggest threat, but it sure don’t help. When people stop caring about the world and just care about themselves, there ain’t no room for understanding. Everyone’s too busy lookin’ out for number one to stop and think about what’s best for the whole country.
And then, just look at the way politicians handle things that should be simple. Instead of finding real solutions, they just keep fighting. Every time they argue, someone else gets hurt, and nothing gets fixed. That’s the real evil of politics. It ain’t just about who’s in charge, it’s about the hurt and the mess left behind when it’s all over.
So, yeah, politics is evil, but we still need it. It’s a nasty, dirty game, but without it, we might end up worse off. We’re stuck with it, like it or not, and we just gotta keep moving, even when we don’t know where it’s takin’ us.
