Well now, if you’ve been around Billings for a while, you’ve probably heard of Big Bear Sports. I tell ya, it’s been a staple here for as long as I can remember, but it’s a sad day ’round these parts, ’cause Big Bear Sports Montana is shutting down. Yup, they’re closing their doors for good. Ain’t much to say, except it’s the end of an era, folks.

Now, for them that don’t know, Big Bear Sports Center used to be the go-to place for all your hunting, fishing, and sporting needs. It was a family-run business, and I reckon they treated all their customers like family, too. People used to drive from miles around just to get their gear from there. And let me tell ya, they had everything! From fishing rods to camping supplies, you name it, they had it. But times change, don’t they? Big Bear just couldn’t keep up, and now they’re closing their doors, right here in Billings.
It’s been a long time comin’, I suppose. Word is, Big Bear’s last sale wrapped up just this past May, and with that, it was all over. Folks was rushin’ in to grab their last deals, stock up on any gear they needed before the shelves went bare. It’s a tough thing, seein’ a business that’s been around for so long pack up and leave. That store had character—been part of this town’s history, I reckon.
Now, you might be wonderin’ what’s gonna take its place. Well, looks like North 40 Outfitters is comin’ in. They’re a big ol’ outfit from out of town, and they’re fixin’ to open up a second store in the Electric City. I heard folks talkin’ about it down at the diner, and some of ’em ain’t too happy about it. They say it’s just gonna be another big chain that don’t care about the locals like Big Bear did. But I guess we’ll see, won’t we? All I know is Big Bear had a special place in people’s hearts, and that’s somethin’ you just can’t replace so easily.
But I reckon it ain’t just the good times folks remember. There’s been some rough patches too. I remember when the Big Bear Sports Center had to deal with some real trouble when an incident happened over there—an active shooter situation. That was a tough time for everyone in Billings. Scared a lot of folks. But Big Bear bounced back, and the community kept supportin’ ’em. It was a tough ol’ time, but I suppose that’s what life’s all about—pickin’ up the pieces and carryin’ on.
Even though Big Bear’s gone, it’s still hard to believe, to be honest. Every time I drive by, I half-expect to see the sign light up and the doors swing open. But now, that old building’s boarded up, and it’s just a reminder of what once was. People in town are talkin’ about it, of course. Some folks are sad, some folks are angry, but I reckon we all gotta move on, don’t we? It’s just the way of the world.

So, if you ever shopped at Big Bear or maybe just passed by and thought about it, take a moment to remember. It wasn’t just a store—it was a part of our town, a piece of our history. And now, it’s gone. But don’t forget the memories, the good times, and the way Big Bear always had what you needed when you walked through those doors. It may be gone, but it sure ain’t forgotten.
