You know, I’ve been thinkin’ a lot ’bout what makes us feel good or bad in our minds, and I heard folks sayin’ that exercise and food got a big part in it. Now, I ain’t no doctor, but I know from the way I feel after a good walk or when I eat somethin’ that don’t upset my stomach, it makes a difference. Now, there’s this fella named Dr. Perlmutter, and he talks a lot ‘bout how the stuff we put in our bodies and how we move around affects our brain. I’m gonna tell ya a bit ’bout what he says.

First off, this Dr. Perlmutter, he’s a smart one. He’s a neurologist, which means he’s all about the brain and what goes on up there. I reckon if you wanna keep your brain workin’ right, you gotta take care of it, just like you would any other part of your body. This fella has written books too, one called “Grain Brain,” and he talks ’bout how things like the food we eat, especially grains, can mess with our brain health. He ain’t just talkin’ nonsense, neither, ‘cause there’s been some studies showin’ that the foods we eat can either help or hurt our heads. You know, I used to think it didn’t matter what you ate, but it really does!
Dr. Perlmutter, he says that what we put in our bellies ain’t just for fillin’ us up. It can make a big difference in how we think, feel, and remember things. And this ain’t just about eatin’ right, it’s also about how we take care of our guts. You see, our bellies ain’t just for food; they got a whole bunch of bacteria that help us out. These little fellas are called the microbiome, and they play a big role in our mental health. If you got a gut that’s not doin’ well, it might be messin’ with your brain too!
Now, Dr. Perlmutter says you don’t need to go runnin’ out to the doctor every time you feel down. There’s plenty you can do at home, like exercise. You don’t gotta be runnin’ marathons, but just movin’ around, gettin’ that blood flowin’, can help keep your brain sharp. Exercise helps make new brain cells, can reduce stress, and makes us feel better. He says we need to move our bodies more to keep our minds healthy, and that’s somethin’ we can all do without a doctor’s visit!
He also talks about how stress is one of the biggest things that messes with our mental health. Stress can mess with our brains, our memory, and make us feel down. But exercise, good food, and gettin’ enough sleep can help keep stress at bay. It’s like takin’ care of your house: if you don’t keep the roof up, it’s gonna fall apart. And if you don’t take care of your brain, it won’t work like it should.
Dr. Perlmutter says we should eat things that help our brain. Now, I know you might be thinkin’, “But what should I eat?” Well, he says foods that are high in healthy fats like avocados and nuts are good. Also, fish like salmon that’s got omega-3 fatty acids is good for your brain too. I ain’t no cook, but I know a good ol’ fish fry can make me feel good all over. And don’t forget your greens – stuff like spinach and broccoli is good for your brain too. So, I reckon if we start eatin’ better, movin’ more, and stressin’ less, we could all feel a bit better.

And let me tell ya somethin’ else. Dr. Perlmutter also talks ‘bout how we should try to cut out foods that ain’t good for our brain, like too much sugar, processed foods, and grains. He says those can hurt our brain over time. I remember when I was younger, we’d have bread with every meal, but now I know maybe it ain’t so good for my head. It’s all ‘bout balance, I suppose.
So, I guess what I’m sayin’ is, if you wanna keep your mind sharp and feel good, you gotta take care of your body too. Dr. Perlmutter talks a lot ‘bout how your gut and your brain are connected, and I believe him. I mean, when I’m feelin’ sick in my belly, my head don’t feel right either. If we start payin’ attention to what we eat, how we move, and how we take care of ourselves, maybe we’ll all be feelin’ a little better in our minds and hearts.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I ain’t sayin’ you gotta follow everything the doctor says to the letter. But if you can eat better, move a little more, and try not to stress too much, I reckon your brain will thank ya. It’s all ‘bout the little things, like eatin’ a good meal, takin’ a walk, and not lettin’ too much worry eat you up inside. So, take care of yourself, and maybe you’ll start feelin’ better in your head too.
